Week 1 NFL Top 12 Power Rankings
Week one of the 2012 NFL season is finished and all I can say is, is that it was a great week. There were many exciting games and surprising results. I think the biggest game that everyone is talking about is the San Francisco 49ers marching into Lambeau Field as a five point underdog and upsetting the Green Bay Packers, 30-22. That score indicates it was a close game, but believe me, one of the touchdowns for Green Bay should have been nullified by a missed penalty call. The 49ers simply dominated the Packers offense from the very first play. I’m sure some people picked the 49ers to win the game, but not the way they did in just dismantling the Packers on the road. It’s safe to say that the additions of Randy Moss and Mario Manningham will help in a big way and elevate Alex Smith’s game even more this year, as the 49ers look to avenge last years NFC Championship game loss to the New York Giants, as they look to get to the Super Bowl this year.
Like last year, I will publish my weekly power rankings every Tuesday. Now that it’s finally the first Tuesday after week one, I can release my first edition of the power rankings of the 2012 NFL season. So let’s get to it, here is the first edition of the 2012 NFL power rankings.
.San Francisco 49ers (1-0) defeated Green Bay Packers 30-22. The biggest surprise of week one, the 49ers go into Lambeau Field and dominate the Packers to start their quest for a Super Bowl title with a number one defense and improving offense.
.New England Patriots (1-0) defeated Tennessee Titans 34-13. The Patriots defense looked much improved in week one on the road in Tennessee and the offense looked as good as it always does, putting up 34 points on the board. The Patriots show no signs of letting up yet.
.Baltimore Ravens (1-0) defeated Cincinnati Bengals 44-13. Joe Flacco, Ray Rice, and the rest of the Ravens offense looked great on Monday night football vs the Bengals. Along with a top five defense, this team will easily contend for the Super Bowl in the AFC.
.Houston Texans (1-0) defeated Miami Dolphins 30-10. My Super Bowl winning pick starts the season off with a beat down of the hopeless Dolphins at home and they look like they are off and rolling and ready to dominate in the AFC South division.
.New York Giants (0-1) lost to Dallas Cowboys 24-17. The Giants get upset by arch rivals, Dallas in the opening game of the year. They didn’t look completely bad and the run game looked great in the second half with Ahmad Bradshaw carrying the load. An improved Cowboys secondary shut down the passing game for Eli Manning and the offense and was the difference maker in the game.
.Green Bay Packers (0-1) lost to San Francisco 49ers 30-22. The Packers get dominated at home by the number one defense in the NFL and look like it will be another long season with their own defense as they looked outright bad against an average offense in San Fran.
.Dallas Cowboys (1-0) defeated New York Giants 24-17. The Cowboys shock the world and upset the Giants on the road in the very first game of the year with a very good defensive performance in shutting down the Giants passing game, and Tony Romo was great for Dallas and utilized his offensive targets very well, especially the number three wide receiver, Kevin Ogletree.
.Atlanta Falcons (1-0) defeated Kansas City Chiefs 40-24. The Falcons offense, which is expected to be a top offense this year, sure looked like one in week one in KC. Matt Ryan and Julio Jones completely carved up the Chiefs defense. Watch out for the Falcons this year folks.
.Chicago Bears (1-0) defeated Indianapolis Colts 41-21. The Bears take care of business with their new look offense that now includes Brandon Marshall, Alshon Jeffery, and Michael Bush. The defense picked off Andrew Luck three times, so the D looks as if it’s in top form already.
.Denver Broncos (1-0) defeated Pittsburgh Steelers 31-19. The Broncos come from behind to knock off the Steelers and hang a 31 spot on their top five defense from a year ago. Peyton Manning looked like the Peyton of old as he threw for 253 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions. Watch out for Denver.
.New York Jets (1-0) defeated Buffalo Bills 48-28. The Jets drop the jaws of everyone as they hang 48 points on a solid Buffalo defense after only scoring one total touchdown in the preseason. Mark Sanchez threw for 266 yards and three touchdowns and the defense looked like it may be a top three unit with how great it looked. Maybe the NYJ will surprise everyone this season.
.Detroit Lions (1-0) defeated St.Louis Rams 27-23. The Lions were on the verge of being upset by a nine-point underdog before Matthew Stafford found Kevin Smith wide open for a game winning touchdown with :10 seconds left to come back and win it in Detroit. Stafford threw three interceptions, so he better get it together as they go up against the 49ers defense that just gave a very tough time to Aaron Rodgers in week one.
