Week 2 NFL Top 12 Power Rankings
Week two of the 2012 NFL season is in the books and it is now time for the second edition of the power rankings for this season. It sure was a wild week when you look back at it as the Arizona Cardinals marched into Gillette Stadium and upset the New England Patriots, 20-18, with their backup quarterback at the helm and their star wide receiver, Larry Fitzgerald, making just one catch for four yards all game. It honestly has to be one of the bigger upsets in the NFL in some time.
In another wild game, the New York Giants, who were down 27-13, with as little as :40 seconds remaining in the third quarter, came back to score 25 points in the fourth quarter to stun the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 41-34. Eli Manning found Victor Cruz on an 80-yard touchdown bomb and found Martellus Bennett on a 33-yard touchdown throw down the sideline to take a 34-27 lead with 3:59 remaining. That was when Tampa Bay QB Josh Freeman marched down the field and connected with Mike Williams on a 44-yard touchdown pass to tie it up 34-34 with 1:58 remaining. What would happen then you say? Eli Manning would march down the field one last time, where he even connected with Hakeem Nicks on a deep pass down the sideline before Andre Brown would scamper into the end-zone untouched for two-yard touchdown run to seal the game with :31 seconds remaining. It was honestly one of the craziest games I had ever witnessed. Oh, and Eli Manning passed for 510 yards, three yards short of Phil Simms’ franchise record. Giants win 41-34.
And finally, the other Manning would be making his Monday night football debut in a Denver Broncos uniform last night. It was not a good night as Peyton threw THREE first quarter interceptions that resulted in 10 Atlanta Falcons points. The Falcons would take a 27-7 lead into the fourth quarter before Peyton Manning and the Broncos scored 14 points in the fourth to get within six points. The Denver defense would try to stop Atlanta from getting two more first downs but couldn’t do it, as Atlanta hung on to win 27-21.
After that recap here are my week two top 12 power rankings.
1.San Francisco 49ers (2-0) defeated Detroit Lions 27-19. Last Week (1). The 49ers defense continues to dominate as they hold the high-flying Lions offense to 19 points ( 1 touchdown, 4 field goals). I don’t think any one can score big points on this defense, which raises the question, are the 49ers ready to get back to the Super Bowl, and can they win it with Alex Smith as the QB? Stay tuned.
2.Houston Texans (2-0) defeated Jacksonville Jaguars 27-7. Last Week (4). The Texans continue to roll as they march into Jacksonville and steamroll the Jaguars 27-7. Arian Foster and Ben Tate ran wild for 184 yards and three touchdowns combined.
3.Atlanta Falcons (2-0) defeated Denver Broncos 27-21. Last Week (8). The Falcons pick off Peyton Manning three times in the first quarter and roll at home behind the strong defensive performance and their great offense.
4.Green Bay Packers (1-1) defeated Chicago Bears 23-10. Last Week (6). The Packers defense looked 100% better in week two vs Chicago then it did week one vs San Francisco as they picked off Jay Cutler four times and sacked him seven times. This team won’t lie down.
5.New York Giants (1-1) defeated Tampa Bay Buccaneers 41-34. Last Week (5). The Giants looked like they were on the brink of being upset by Tampa Bay but storm back with 25 fourth quarter points to win a wild game. This team better figure out their secondary problems soon.
6.New England Patriots (1-1) lost to Arizona Cardinals 20-18. Last Week (2). The Patriots get stunned at home by Arizona, and lose Aaron Hernandez to an ankle injury. It’s still not panic time in Foxborough yet, people.
7.Baltimore Ravens (1-1) lost to Philadelphia Eagles 24-23. Last Week (3). The Ravens and Eagles game was hard-fought with the Eagles squirming out another one point win and Joe Flacco looked like the old Joe Flacco and not the one we saw in week one.
8.Philadelphia Eagles (2-0) defeated Baltimore Ravens 24-23. Last Week (N/R). The Eagles look less sloppy in another one point win as the passing game was much improved with Mike Vick passing for 371 yards and a touchdown. Another two interceptions give him six through two games so far though.
9.San Diego Chargers (2-0) defeated Tennessee Titans 38-10. Last Week (N/R). The Chargers pound the Titans and are 2-0 as they look to reclaim the AFC West division title. They’re looking like they mean business this year and have looked great without Vincent Jackson on the team anymore.
10.Pittsburgh Steelers (1-1) defeated New York Jets 27-10. Last Week (N/R). The Steelers pass and run all over the Jets defense and have a tremendous defensive performance even without Troy Polamalu and James Harrison. I think this team will take a step back this year, but they looked like the Steelers of old again after a lackluster performance in Denver week one.
11.Arizona Cardinals (2-0) defeated New England Patriots 20-18. Last Week (N/R). The Cardinals shock the world and beat the Patriots on the road with their backup QB at the helm. The defense was stifling and really controlled the Pats offense. Is Arizona gonna duke it out all season for the NFC West title with San Francisco?
12.Denver Broncos (1-1) lost to Atlanta Falcons 27-21. Last Week (10). The Broncos looked bad in the first half vs Atlanta going down 20-7 at halftime. That was before Peyton Manning and Willis McGahee would turn it on in the second half and score 14 in the fourth quarter to make it a closer loss. This team won’t be an easy win against this year.
