2012 MLB Playoff Predictions

I was against making my full MLB playoff picks until after both Wildcard games were played and all the LDS match ups were set. Both games are now over and the full match ups are now set. We already knew that the Oakland A’s were facing the Detroit Tigers in one ALDS and that the San Francisco Giants were facing the Cincinnati Reds in one NLDS match up. What we didn’t know was who were the number one seed New York Yankees in the AL and the number one seed in the NL, the Washington Nationals, were going to play. Well now that both wildcard games are over, we now know. The Yankees will take on the Baltimore Orioles after the O’s beat the Texas Rangers 5-1. The Nationals will play the defending World Series champions, the St.Louis Cardinals, who defeated the Atlanta Braves 6-3. Both wildcard game winners were the five seeds, so they both won as underdogs. Both games were great, but I’m still not on board with the whole sudden death, winner take all format. I probably won’t ever be on board with it, but a way to get me more interested is to at least making it an actual series, best two out of three series to determine who faces each leagues number one seeds.

There is no clear-cut World Series favorite by any estimation, so the field is wide open and ANYTHING can happen. I just ask that we get seven tremendous series and I think we will with the stories behind every team this year and all their particular strengths. There are two Cinderella stories in the AL as the Baltimore Orioles have reached the ALDS after compiling a 93-69 record to win the number two wildcard spot. The Oakland A’s shocked the world as well and with nine games to play they erased a five game deficit in the AL West and swept the Rangers in a three game series to end the season at home to win the AL West at 94-68. A team filled with rookies and the A’s beat out the Rangers and new look Los Angeles Angels to win the AL West, who could have seen that coming? Anyways, here are my picks.

#5 St.Louis Cardinals defeat #1 Washington Nationals 3-2.
#3 San Francisco Giants defeat #2 Cincinnati Reds 3-2.

#3 San Francisco Giants defeat #5 St.Louis Cardinals 4-2.

#1 New York Yankees defeat #5 Baltimore Orioles 3-1.
#2 Oakland A’s defeat #3 Detroit Tigers 3-2.

#2 Oakland A’s defeat #1 New York Yankees 4-3.

World Series: #3 San Francisco Giants defeat #2 Oakland A’s 4-2.
World Series MVP: Matt Cain, SP, San Francisco Giants.
